What a gentle persistent rain, throughout the day; the insects and birds holed up in the dry places- the hills and trees and crops and wild places thirstily drinking up, after too long a dry spell.
And indoors, it's an old friend over ; the weather allowing hot tea once again. And a blueberry gluten free coffee cake to boot, welcome heat pouring from the stove, as we stand in the back doorway, gazing at the herb garden, glorious with its regal riot of blossomings and late August show of fertility.
Each evening the Coywolves yipping has been closer , as they move farther in for winter , the group howling announcing territory for all to hear.
And we do - all hear, the dogs and the cats, with perked up ears, and myself pausing each time the large wild ones start up.
As the third haying is approaching and the Wild Turkey babies are larger and more agile, chowimg down in preparation for the cold times to come.
As the bear in the woods are less predictable and - may I say-a bit cranky? Rooting out ripe luscious immune boosting Elder berries and insects and fragrant edible roots, to pack on that life giving winter weight ; mumbling to their fast growing young to do the same ,
though I'm certain all the parental urging that goes on each year with Geese and birds and skunks and bear is much like our own with our young ones , when they were in training to be off on their own, in the human version of the long, spare, cold winter.
I'm thankful that all of mine have landed, and well, and that I am left contemplating this time of life , now, so individual and yet so distinct, in intent and in each moment.
Happy Friday to all .
