When you are a six pound cat, and a German Shepherd pup moves in, growing larger and larger, you really have to take things into your own hands. Mary accepted Dante; she kept him in line. As a feral, she has a short, unexpected fuse, and then ,that's it.
When he's bored and I'm resting, he would provoke her into chasing him out of the room all the time, if I let him.
One
day, I was writing in my study upstairs. There is a board in the way usually,
to obstruct cat-sanctuary and litter boxes from him. This particular day, there
was some wiggle room, and in he wiggled.
Picture this. Four cats, reclining in their chairs, their beds, their pillow formations (for cold day,multi-cat cuddles). Their toys, catnip, food and water. This day, he made his big mistake. In he came, tentatively, and I didn't notice until he had come round my golden velvet chair (Mary's, actually), she woke up, and furiously chased him round the chair, out of the room, attaching herself to his backend with all four paws's claws digging into him, as he panicked and raced down the staircase, the hellion on him still.

Per
usual, all the other cats shot to the top of the stairs, to defend one of their
own, if necessary. But it wasn't. Mary sauntered up a bit later, curled in a
ball, washed herself, and went to sleep. Dante hid out in the kitchen for
awhile, then went to seek solace from Shiva.
Mary will raise her head and give him barely a glance, then return to
cat napping.
The other three cats know she has the whole thing under control.
So does he.
Beautiful cat, beautiful photo...cozy home
