It was a long day, a good
day, and despite being settled in front of Netflix, I asked if he'd like to sit
out back. I grabbed the pup on leash, and out we went.
Past the maybe ten newly fledged baby Sparrows, all nervously perched beneath the eaves, in a tiny line up. Past the colors of the herb garden shimmering in the dusk.
Past the long field and forests that surround us.
Out back, where we sat and the pup wrestled with his leash and snuffed about, and silence ensued, with small moments of smiles and talk.
The sky was relentlessly remarkable and I restrained the desire to run in to take the photo , as he smiled more at my wanting and I laughed, told him to bug off.
A boat down on the river careened about a corner. The earth turned a bit more.
One cicada started up and then paused, when another across the field began in.
The pup calmed, and sat before us, sniffing the land and listening as we did.
A fox screeched in the woods nearby , reminding all of their territory .
Mosquitoes arrived for the first time all year, and we slapped them away, glad finally for the bats.
He got up before I, so we both walked down the hill to the back door. I watched through the window as the pup raced around once more.
As he opened the back door and I heard his screech and bam bam bam. Walked up closer to the window to find out what was up.
He'd stepped on large bubble wrap, stumbled , set them off again .

Oh, I
laughed.
