I knew her through birth, death, and divorce , all of which I attended. She knew me through
a brain injury, one year to the day after my youngest acquired one, and having
come by one summers day much like this one, with a baby on her hip and two
older ones , spirited mine all away, telling me to go lie down.
We stole time for lunches together , did errands, laughed, and in between the demands of young ones, talked for hours on the phone.
About birth and death and being and nothingness.
We traded working on each other, nourishing each other, shared so many sadnesses and such gales of laughter.
Never did she make assumptions, but only asked questions; only asked how it was for me, as I did for her.
Far away now, through so much, the precious nature of true friendship now a part of my bones.
