7.18.17 Riding that wave

Living with tough circumstances is riding a wave. Continually riding the waters, on and on.
Responding to still waters that do not move and go nowhere. Responding to swift waters that careen and twist and turn and surprise.
Expressing distress. Resting in love, in the long path of accepting and letting go of much, one at a time.
Remaining strong and vibrant, not as an effort, but by continuing to bring ourselves to exercise that strengthens and brings sleep.
To simple nourishing meals that provide fuel and strength.
To the simple routines of our day, quietly and without worry, that ground us in our selves.
To laughter, where we find it, and tears and sadness. The letting go, and then letting go again.
To the expression of so much emotion and thought, by simply being with them, and identifying them as such.
Continually emptying ourselves by this expression, so we can return to the present, and the closeness and clarity it has to offer.

7.10.17 Bat happy

After not seeing our neighborhood bats for two past years of drought, we discovered they'd had FOUR babies!!!! Here's hoping they find the fancy bat house, to hibernate in, and use as a nursery.
Last night I walked outside before bed, and there was a shooting star!
And , there, were the babies, flying about with their parents.
Who could ask for more?

7.10.17 Mindfulness is not some big deal. Its a little simple deal.

Image may contain: cloud, sky, plant, grass, tree, outdoor and nature

Mindfulness is not some big deal, or class you need to pay for, or any other excuse we make up.
Mindfulness is so simple it's almost disappointing. Mindfulness is what you really might want to practice while life is normal tough.
Because, if we know anything to be true, it simply is that, if we live long enough, things are going to get really tough. And being practiced at mindfulness is going to be the biggest thing that will help.
Trying out mindfulness and practicing mindfulness when we're pissed off or too tired or nervous or overwhelmed is perfect.
It's kind of like, we know at some point where we live is going to be water, and so we begin learning to swim.
Reading a book or taking a class or studying a website or getting an app is all fine and good.
Sometimes it's the path for people. Find your own.
But learning to do it simply, and then remembering what it's gonna provide for you every single day, is really really simple. Here we go.
     1. At some point in the day, whether you're walking somewhere or driving somewhere or you're on the toilet or it's evening or you're about to go to bed or you're really upset, just remain here in the present moment.
Just for now.
Every time you start thinking about the future or the past, sit up and notice, and just come on back to the present moment.
     2. Watch the thoughts or feelings you're having. Pick one. It could be anything. Everything is a thought or feeling. So, maybe, "Oh,it's really going to be a mess now."
Or "This is never going to work".
Or "Why does this always happen to me?". Those are all thoughts, and they all have their own feelings.
     3. To practice mindfulness, all you do is pick one. One thought, or one feeling.
Now, we're really used to thinking that whatever feeling we are having is what our life Is. But it's not.      That's the big secret. That's not you and it's not your life. It's just a thought you're having. Or a feeling you're having.
To practice mindfulness, so you get incredibly good at it, so that when real shit hits a real fan, you are able and versatile, you pick one thought That you're having right now.
Let's say "I am so sick of this happening."
You look at that, and you say to yourself, in surprise, "Oh, that's a thought. "
And now you have identified it.
Now you're aware that it's not life, actually, it's a thought.
And you just sit there.
Or drive there or walk there or whatever.
And you watch yourself watching that thought, while realizing it's a thought. You don't let it take off. You don't let it go anywhere. You just watch it.
It comes on. It gets more compelling. You just watch that one thought. Saying to yourself that that's a thought.
It kind a rises up and fills you with all kinds of stuff, and maybe then you have a feeling. Like, you feel anxious, overwhelmed, or angry, or whatever. And then, you say to yourself "Oh,that's a feeling."
And then you watch that feeling. And it rises up, and maybe gets pretty strong, and you just keep watching it, reminding yourself what it is. It's not life. It's not you. It's a feeling. And then, it passes on by.
And then, it's more digested. You have more awareness. And you settle down more. And you feel better. You have more clarity.
You can just remind yourself to check it out once a day. Sometimes when a lot of tough stuff is happening, it's easier to do it earlier in the day. You just have to do it for a couple minutes. And then it's done.
Pretty soon, you start doing it without thinking. You're sitting there, and you feel all kinds of dread about something, and you suddenly realize it's a thought.
So you say to yourself "Oh, that's a feeling."
And instead of thinking it or going along with the past and the future and all kinds of stuff, you just watch that one simple thought.
You watch it, and you sit with it, and you keep reminding yourself it's a thought, and then it passes on by.
A little bit composted. And you're a little bit clearer. And you're more in the present.
Whenever we manage to simply let ourselves be in the present, our self knows what to do. Our self knows how to digest all kinds of crap that's been bothering us and difficult stuff that's been building up.
Sometimes we have this big backlog of disturbing difficult stuff. When we are managing to practice mindfulness, it all gets in the line. All excited. Ready to come on up, And get digested. So there's not so much pressure. A huge reduction in our Kemal everyday sense of distress.
Soon, if we practice mindfulness enough, way old stuff starts filtering its way up.
We notice some kind of old memory or thought or feeling, and we say "Wow. That's an old one."
And we sit mindfully with it. And then our self is so relieved, that that thing isn't just turning in circles inside of us, stuck somewhere. Instead, it's beginning to get digested and broken down into little tiny pieces, where it can dissolve. And no longer trigger us or tangle us up.
Sooner or later, we start getting really pretty good at it.
     Something really tough happens.
We have a thought, that we used to believe and just run crazy with. That would just mess us up, and mess up the people around us, and we would get stuck in it, day after day after day, and our sleep would get disturbed and our health would suffer. But now? We understand.
We sit up with a new awareness. We look that thought or that feeling in the eye, and we say to ourselves "Why, that's a thought." Or "Hey, that's a feeling!"
The coolest part is that our selves know how to do this. And all we have to do,to get the dynamic working, is to bring ourselves to the present moment, notice a feeling or thought, and then sit there quietly, while we watch it and feel it, reminding ourselves what it is, and then let it pass on by.

7.2.17 All the ways

I love how we all go along our paths , with our own inimitable twists and turns, discovering what holds meaning.

What means the most to you might not to me.

Therein lies our choice and our freedom.

If we want to, we continue to grow and change and
choose our whole lives, until we die.

This reminds us that we can choose so many turns,
and keep becoming.

7.1.17 So many cathedrals

I'm outside every single day.
It's like breathing, how necessary it feels.
So often I pass by places that are Cathedrals.

Forest pathways. Country roads. Thickets.
So many Cathedrals.
Moving us to contemplation, to prayer.

How remarkable, whether we are a little kid,
or an older person, to know what within us
is soothed and realigned, by being out
upon the earth.

7.1.17 Forgiveness

Image may contain: cloud, sky, tree, grass, house, outdoor and nature

Recently there's been some pretty tough things going on with someone close to me. And while navigating the tough tough circumstances with them, I began to notice the weight and complexity of some hurt and grudges I'd accumulated over the past six months. Tough experiences I sat with and settled but didn't figure out how to forgive. Or let go of. And suddenly here I was, aware of the bulky easily bruised heavy leftovers I've been stumbling around with.
Suddenly I found myself grateful for the tough tough circumstances. For the way they illuminated the things I'd been bitterly grasping.
Because unknowingly holding tight to hurt, and even unkind injustice, changes us. Changes our clear and present perception to one hindered by our just-like-new reactivity.
Sometimes ,we find these things so difficult ,we lose sight of the mound of mess we've created, that twists who we are, and obstructs our ability to live and breathe, here, in the present moment.
And recognizing the impact our response has created does not sanction what someone has done. If it involves a gross unkindness or injustice, it does not change the nature of that event. It simply brings our awareness of what we've inadvertently changed about ourselves to light. In case we decide this is not something we want to continue to hold onto.
So, I brought myself down to the farmers fields, and I forgave. I said out loud to the wind and the rain and the dirt road and the swinging trees, I said that I was forgiving this person and this one and this.
And with each one, I let myself mindfully feel the thoughts, the feelings, identifying each to myself as they rose up, the tethered unforgiven.
I said "That is a thought." I said to myself "And this is a feeling." I went through them one by one, as I walked and felt these intense things, and let them pass on by.
When we do this, whether we are on the wave of something sweet and remarkable, or pain filled and tough as nails, it's not a magic wand 'Bing' all better. Rather, it's the declaration and intention of a good beginning. Starting the flow of forgiveness, washing clean the old stuck hurt.
Just beginning to let drop from our tight grasp the things that have hurt and upset and harmed.            Because we wake up suddenly with an awareness of the heavy accrued bitter hurt, keeping us from going good real places, from being our awake true selves, keeping us stuck to the past. We sit up, surprised, and then grateful. That these tough tough circumstances have enabled us to catch sight of the deal we were running.
Instead, with mindfulness and forgiving, we learn from our experiences. We change how we choose to know certain others, as a wise adaptive response.
And then we continue on, informed by experience, as we walk along. Letting go, letting go, letting go.

6.30.17 Down and down and down

It's early in the morning.
We are readying for an appointment.
He's in the shower.
I pull back the curtain to mention something.
I see his face.
I climb into the shower.
We hold each other.
While the rain pours
down and down and down,
all around us.

6.29.17 Two hands clapping

Last night , windows open, I awoke to frightened loud chittering outside. Someone about to become dinner.

So I threw on my sandals , put on the outside light, and ran out.

People here were asleep, so I just clapped. Loud. A lot.

The progress of the hunted and hunter stopped. I suspect a young raccoon and a fisher.

I stayed out for a bit, making a pain of myself. This often gives the hunted a chance to scoot away. If the hunter follows, the noise escalates.

The night was cool, the sky somewhat lit, the motion detector light far into the woods next door set off.

So I swatted mosquitoes and gazed at the night sky and clapped til my hands stung.

6.29.17 Smiling Subconscious

Going down paths makes our sub-consciousness smile.
A path being such an iconic, profound archetype to a human.
Of beginnings and the inherent process.
Of remaining focused, and not lost, or fallen.
Of trusting the process of step after step.
How we learn that our perspective changes as we wander along.

6.29.17 How odd

How odd it is that, if we lean too far forward, someone has no room to yearn for us.
And if we step back step back step back, we are inaccessible.

Which means the answer is to remain aware of others, not give in to acting out rampant needs in silly meaningless ways, and simply solidly be with ourselves.

6.28.17 I cannot follow

You have gone off, and I can't find you
You, who I used to hold close, have wandered off
You, who didn't notice my efforts or observation
or careful mindful ways
Holding you close and offering to you and asking

You who come and go, sole proprietor without
noticing how you choose
You who struggle with this fast flowing mystery school
Who averts eyes and avoids thought
and communication and care in hopes
you can deter its steady beat
You who go off and where you are I cannot follow

6.28.17 Coyote moon

Last night I wandered about in the cool evening air
watching the day slowly draw to a close.
Not an hour later, I peered out my kitchen window into the near darkness, to see two beautiful young coyote
20 feet away, standing together in the conservation field. Beneath the slivered moon.

6.28.17 Regaining the big picture

I woke early this morning, surrounded by four footeds, large and small. The brave new light of earth's day shining in the windows.
I'd had a perfectly nice dream in process, til a bit of macabre had woken me, and quickly.
But the wondrous thing about being almost 65.... well, there are so many tough things and wonderful things, truly, but one is that , when you are feelings anxiety about an upcoming event, you can both anticipate it's probability, and the signs are easy to read.
There is something I am starting out on today , some new possibility that will not crash and burn, or pan out ,for a bit. Something multifaceted and welcome and maybe impossible and perhaps not. Something that, heading towards, will focus on a line of items important to try to address anyway.
So last night I took an evening walk and let slip the day's twists and turns, one by one. Watching feelings and thoughts rise up , tug at me, and slip on by.
I headed into bed early without further ado.
And now this morning, it is time for the letting go.
When there is something I very much would like, I sit with it and I let go.
     It's just common sense, really.
If it's a job, letting go cools you out, helps you settle into a calm confidence, and makes it more possible to be interviewed, to be explained to, to try out.
If it's a lover, letting go untangles your grasped fingers from dreams and yearnings and all, that you're inadvertently splashing all over somebody else; your errant needs, just knotting up possibility.
If it's a home, letting go seems to let you acknowledge your ( sometimes fervent ) preferences, and then helps you regain a big big big perspective.
Pulling back, pulling yourself back, until, instead of you and an endless fantasy of dreams answered and all, you plop yourself back into the cosmos at large. The world at large.
Where you regain your big picture, where you let go of the racing-about needs and hopes and grabby imaginings.
Where you let go of ideas and feelings and settle back into just what is happening now.
The sunrise outside my window is something rather eloquent today, deep blues and wispy clouds and the same orange along the edges that was visiting last night.
So I'm going to sit here, with my dozing dog, with my half awake cats, with the approaching light, and settle down into meditation.
Letting go letting go letting go.

6.26.17 Now it's time

I wasn't quite done with the whole long complex day. Not quite untangled out enough for sleep. So I invited Danto to come on along, and down down we went , down the slope of the range, to the Eagle Sanctuary. And stood and inhaled and exhaled. And felt the small summer wind breeze by. And watched the cows in the almost darkness across the way. The passing cars casting their headlights into the darkness. The sliver of moon brightening. The muted colors coming forth. As the earth slowly turned, and I readied myself for sleep.
