1.31.15 Here, where the cold comes upon us

Photo: Ah, the last month of winter here, we are now entering.
Here, where the cold comes upon us, finally, as our faces ache after coming back indoors, from a walk.
Where we have one winter storm after another ; too many to any longer get in a tizzy about.
Where the car, come morning, exhibits just a moment's pause , as if considering whether it truly is worthwhile to make the effort, get the freezing cold parts moving, and start.
Where dog leads must be defrosted with patient fingers, in order to open and attach to collars , and timers set to five minutes, so as not to freeze the dogs.
Where hats and scarves and gloves are no longer forgotten, as we leave our homes.
As we peer at those on bicycles, whether from necessity or admirable commitment, and secretly shake our heads in gaping wonder.
Where we fill the feeders and strew seeds upon picnic tables and ground the night before, and stock suet regularly , such are the caloric needs of our avian neighbors , in order to survive the bitter nights.
Where we remember bringing insistent young children skating and sledding , pulling them by force , noisily resisting , back into the car when their cheeks were this red and they could no longer speak , for numb lips.
Where the evening view of the heavens never seems clearer or more endless , and we look forward to those few moments each night before bed, insanely standing outside in pajamas and slippers, our breath a living cloud, our insides filling with the broad bright night , and it's star filled skies .
